Learning Behaviors Project

A pair of Learning Behaviors & Learning Spaces questionnaires I developed asked students and faculty members to

  • identify which specific intentional learning behaviors (mostly drawn from the National Survey of Student Engagement) are important to them,
  • say whether their camus provides space that is supportive of the learning behaviors they identify as important, and
  • specify (from a list) the particular non-classroom spaces on their campus that are supportive of learning.

Student and faculty member responded to these questions in notably different ways.  Their responses enable planners to map the distinctively supportive learning spaces across campus.

Research reports
Survey results from one liberal arts college are reported, along with other survey data on related topics, in my paper, “Designing for Uncertainty: Three Approaches,” Journal of Academic Librarianship, 33.2 (2007): 165-179.

Six institutions used the questionnaires between 2006 and 2009 with the understanding that the resulting data would figure, anonymously, in a report on the findings, value, and space planning implications of the surveys. That report is titled “Learning Behaviors and Learning Spaces” and was published in portal: Libraries and the Academy, 11.3 (July 2011): 765-789.

The six surveys resulted in far more data than could reasonably be published in portal. There follows the complete set of data and related material on which the published report is based.
